Tszuj-It! -- A Fab Five Fansite

Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2003, 12/17/2003

(Partial) Transcript

Barbara Walters: If you could describe this year in one word, what would it be?
Kyan: Wow!
Carson: Wee!
Thom: Oh my God!

Kyan: Historically in our society, gay men and straight men have been afraid of one another. So that’s part of the beauty of the show, we actually learn that we don’t have so much to fear from one another and we are just human beings.
Carson: And we learn that we have a lot in common too. We teach them about shoes and they teach us about hockey.
Kyan: It’s a good arrangement.

Barbara: But perhaps their best make over is how they transformed the public’s acceptance of gay men. This is the year in which gay became sort of in.
Carson: Gay is the new black.
Barbara: Do you think that you made a difference in the acceptance of gays?
Thom: I don’t think we attempted to. No political agenda. The positive things that have come out of the show have happened completely organically.
Kyan: It’s a light show. You can’t really take it seriously.
Carson: We’ve doing makeovers, for God's sake.
Kyan: Right, we not saving lives, we’re tszujing hair.

Barbara: But some members of the gay community are less than thrill, saying that the show just perpetuates gay stereotypes.
Carson: We were going to have a florist on our team, but we said “no, then we will have every stereotype. We shouldn’t do it.” We are just presenting real people here. We are totally ourselves on camera...
Ted: We are not playing characters.
Carson: …working in the fields of our expertise.
Ted: The real irony I have about the gay community bringing up that issue as a problem with our show is that we take behaviours that have been, at times, considered stereotypically gay and we use those skills to help the SG get the girl. They wanted those skills all along.

Carson: The thing that is really, really great is that you will have kids, like a gay 19 year old, come up to you and say, “you know, I was afraid to broach this dialogue with my family and because of your show we all sat down, we watched it...” And we can do that. And if I had that opportunity, you know, ten years ago, it would have changed my life, made it so much different. And if we are able to do that through a makeover show, “wow!”
Barbara: That’s fascinating. If you can help, especially young people, feel that they could be accepted. We you all out before the show?
Kyan: Absolutely.
Ted: Not this out.
Carson: No, not really.
Ted: Not like this.
Kyan: I told my family I was gay like when I was 20.
Jai: Your family is really supportive.
Kyan: I have the most amazing family.
Jai: My mom isn’t accepting of the whole gay thing. I think suddenly when the show started taking off and people were recognizing me from the show and calling her all the time, even people from church and stuff, it sort of opened doors of communication.
Barbara: What about you Carson?
Carson: When did I...?
Barbara: When did you come out, or did they always know?
Carson: Tell my family? When does this show air? July 15, I think on the 14th, in a rainstorm, in a mini-van. “Don’t take your hands off the wheel…”
Ted: Most of us, even those of us who were pretty out, we weren’t this out. And now we are way, way out!
Kyan: We are like the five gayest people on the planet.

Barbara: What do u say to the people who say that one of you is really straight?
Carson: It’s me.
Ted: It’s out now. There, you’ve got it.
Thom: I got a call from a radio station, they ask me, they said, “is it true that you are the straight one?” and I said, “oh my god, please stop spreading this rumour, my wife and children are going to freak out when they hear this.”
Barbara: So I have to ask you something, because I got all dressed up for today, did the make up, did the makeup thing, put the jacket on.
Guys: Love it.
Barbara: Anything you would change?
Guys: No.
Ted: On you?
Jai: You always look great, though.
Barbara: You said all the right things so we will give you more time than everybody else!
Ted: Thank you.
Barbara: Thank you, guys.
Guys: Thank you.
Thom:You are amazing.
