Tszuj-It! -- A Fab Five Fansite

The Philippine Daily Inquirer, 7/23/2006

Thom Filicia

What's your stand on same sex marriage?
Thom: I think there are gay families out there that would greatly benefit from the opportunities married couples enjoy. I think marriage has become a really difficult word—it has become problematic for gay families with children but I think it will happen and I hope it happens sooner than later because I think it’s really important. I know there are a lot of families that would really benefit from there. It should be there but it’s not. But things are changing.

If you had to date someone from the Fab Five, who would it be?
Oh my goodness. Let’s see.. Carson I would date because he’s hysterically funny. Jai because he’s probably the most low-maintenance. Kyan I would date because he’s probably my partner in crime. Ted I would date because he’s a great cook. (Laughs)

Who would be last on your list?
Me. I would never date me. Because I would annoy myself.

Have you ever dated a girl?
I have. My girlfriend in college I dated for three years. I had six girlfriends throughout high school and college.

How did you come out?
I came out right after I graduated from college.

But when did you realize that you were gay?
I thought about it when I was in middle school. But I didn’t really understand it, I didn’t know what it meant. At that age and at that time, it was different. You didn’t even know that that was really an option. I thought maybe everybody thought what I was thinking. When I was a little older, I realized that that was something different. I came out when I graduated from college and told my parents about a year later. For me it was really about making a decision.

Do you find it harder to date now?
I have a boyfriend. We’ve been together for two and a half years. His name’s Greg. And I have a dog, his name’s Paco. It’s like...

... A family.
Yeah.

Is your dog housebroken?
He’s definitely housebroken. He’d make mistakes from time to time except I don’t think they’re mistakes, I think he’d get mad at me. Like right now, because I’m not with him, he’s probably peeing on something in my house. But tomorrow he’ll be going to the country, he’ll be at the lake.

Did you ever do a makeover on a guy who turned out not to be straight?
No. We thought a couple of them might not be but we asked them, “Are you gay or straight?” And they always say straight. So we believe them. (Rolls eyes.)

Who’s the funniest among all of you?
I think we’re all pretty funny. I think we’re funniest when we’re not trying to be funny.

Who’s the most vain?
Kyan.

Who’s the most serious?
Ted.

Temperamental?
Carson.

Talkative?
Me. (Laughter)

In terms of interior design, who do you think needs the most help?
Jai.

How do you feel about “Queer Eye for the Straight Girl?”
I think it’s... very different from our show. (Laughter)

I agree. What was designing Jennifer Lopez’ and Marc Anthony’s house like?
It was really helping them create their first home as opposed to just styling their interiors. I loved it.

Was it easy to work with them?
I think celebrities in general, when you’re dealing with a person who’s very busy, there are definitely opinions. There’s really no such thing as an easy job but I think that it came out very well.

What establishments do you remember for having good interior design in the Philippines?
Last time I was here, we had lunch at a house—I don’t know where it was—but it was really beautiful. I went to a club called Embassy and it was really beautiful. And we went to the American embassy which was really beautiful. And I’ve seen some condominiums that were being built. And I think the Shangri-La is a great hotel, run really, really well. And the malls are gorgeous.
