[Emmy Report] We got inside the Shrine, and my companion had to go to the men's room. I walked in, and right in front of me were our favorite Queer Eyes, Carson and Kyan, standing at the urinals with their backs to me (I'd recognize Kyan's backside anywhere). It did occur to me that this was a Kodak moment, and I doubt it would have fazed either one of 'em, but I declined.
Fredericksburg Free Lance Star, 11/18/2004
[Report on The Today Show's 'Superstar' contest, on which the Fab Five appearaed as judges, featuring Fredericksburg native Anthony Campbell] The "Superstars" shared a room yesterday with the Fab Five, hosts of Bravo's "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy." The Five served as celebrity judges, rendering witty praise and flashcards about the contestants' singing prowess. [...] After makeup, Campbell sat for a while, then wandered to a corner to rehearse his song. Rothe sang his song in another corner. Members of the Fab Five found another corner and changed their clothes for the show. Carson Kressler, decked out in jeans and a white cowboy hat, introduced himself to Rothe and Campbell. "I'm wearing this in honor of Farmer Boy," he said joking with Rothe, who took a year off from school to work on his grandfather's Midwest farm. "I'm a farmer, too. I was in 4-H--head, heart and what's the rest of that ?" By 8 a.m., the trio was ushered upstairs to tape a promo with the "Fab Five."

[Emmy Report] As midnight rolls by, I team up with my TV diva cohort Kristin Veitch, and the two of us hit the dance floor and start shaking our things with Queer guys Carson Kressley and Thom Filicia. "This is fabunail!" screeches Kressley, with a toss of his blond mane. But as the beginning refrain of OutKast's "Hey Ya!" cranks out, the West Hollywood Sheriff puts the kibosh on the loud music. The crazy crowd boos and hisses, and the party-killing sheriff is overruled. The deejay kicks the music back on, and we resume our boogy action with our new boy-toys.
Dallas News, 9/24/2004
Summer's over and the Queer Eye guys had to go home, but last weekend they had one final whoop-it-up farewell party in Texas. Nikita in West Village closed down for the night for the private wrap party for the show's Dallas shoot. Meanwhile, the next night, Carson Kressley and Jai Rodriguez dined at Parigi on Oak Lawn, where one diner stopped to ask Carson, "How do I look?" "Well, you're missing a belt," he answered. You were expecting Carson to spare your feelings? Carson?!
Style Network, 9/21/2004
[Recap after the Fab Five won their Emmy] They looked great, all five in black tuxes, most with white shirts (except Carson, in a black shirt, and Kyan, who was hiding in the back and appeared to be wearing something that was... magenta/purple/teal? it looked irridescent, but he hid behind Thom and Jai the whole time), Thom in a smart black bow tie. They were being interviewed by Finola Hughes, and first off, Jai told her how he'd actually been in her dressing room, 'cause when he was on "All My Children," they put him in the dressing room she had previously used. Then, Jai mentioned how he was surprised that they let them take their Emmys home on the plane and noted that the trophies are pretty heavy, and Ted said that the wings are sharp enough to make a good letter opener. Carson started to mention the bringing-home-a-lady thing, how hey, that was the first time he ever brought home a lady, and he kinda liked it. Thom chimed in saying how he'd called his dad after, saying "Guess what, I brought home a lady." Kyan said that he actually slept with his that first night.

[Emmy Report from an Emmy staffer] At one point I was supposed to escort on the Queer Eye guys back for their presentation---he wasn't in his seat---I told someone with a headset (usually someone who's in the know)---this set off a whole ordeal about finding these guys! LOL Rather funny now! They were actually in their row, just not where they were assigned to be. They were all jumped on to the stage & all was good.
Dallas News, 9/5/2004
When it comes to insta-celebrities birthed by television, the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy Fab 5 are rivaled only by The Monkees and the Partridge Family. While they're in Dallas shooting episodes for their show, the boys have been all over town. Just a mere glimpse of Carson Kressley elicits squeals reminiscent of the days of Davy Jones and David Cassidy. As the summer ends and the Gulfstreams start heading back from Aspen and La Jolla, the Fab 5 have been livening up our little backwater with surprise appearances and witty bons mots.
All the patrons at Local in Deep Ellum tried to be blasé as Queer Eye guy Kyan Douglas came in for dinner. But the din of people whispering, "That's Kyan from Queer Eye," like a mantra was almost deafening. The fashionable crowd tried not to stare, but there must have been a lot of weak bladders in the house, because hordes of people were suddenly heading to the bathroom so they could walk by and get a gander at Kyan. Following a party for the stars at the downtown Neiman's, they headed out for some serious R&R. Some of the Queer Eye guys headed for the nightclub strip on Cedar Springs, where they stayed until the wee hours.
Dallas News, 9/4/2004
The Queer Eye for the Straight Guy Fab Five have been watching too many reruns of Dallas. They brought their version of the Batmobile – their black Queer Eye Chevy Suburban – down with them from New York. But it has been modified. The Queer Eye cruiser showed up for a shopping spree at West Village on Wednesday with a set of longhorns attached to the hood. Monday night, design doctor Thom Filicia stayed at Tom Tom Noodle House in West Village until closing time. On Wednesday, witty Carson Kressley showed up for lunch.
D Magazine, 8/26/2004
The Queer Eyes were swarmed like popes or presidents by a crowd that responded like starving paparazzi when the boys walked onto Neiman's second floor last night around 7:30. Prior to the party, we heard guests were all worked up about what to wear, scouring the town for just the right outfit, so as not to offend Carson Kressley's fashion sensibilities. Brooches were as plentiful (and as pretty) as gorgeous gay guys--I am not sure of which there were more. Piles of sushi, shoe shopping, and sucking down spiked snow cones--now that's my kind of party. The discarded lamb chop bones strewn across the tops of the jewelry cases were a bit unnerving, though, and Thom Filicia was a bit rattled when Kyan Douglas took one look at People Newspapers' Stacey Yervasi and said, "Did we make out?" Seems the two were at Loyola at the same time. No, Kyan, you and Stacey didn't kiss back at college, but you can make out with me anytime.
Dallas/Fort Worth Star-Telegram, 8/24/2004
Be on the lookout for the ultra-fashionable stars of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. The "Fab Five" - Carson, Jai, Kyan, Ted and Thom - are currently filming three episodes of their popular cable makeover show in the Metroplex. Thom Filicia, the series' interior-design expert and a spokesman for Pier 1 Imports, stopped by the chain's downtown Fort Worth store Monday morning. He says the gang will be in town for several weeks -- which might be the reason attempts to get them to stop by the headquarters of dorky straight guys (aka the Star-Telegram) so far have not come to pass. It would take months to make us presentable.
Access Hollywood, 7/16/2004
This year's Emmy category for Best Reality Program features some rather unlikely names, including Hollywood heavyweights Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, whose "Project Greenlight" series for HBO is up for the award. But if power lies in numbers, as they say, then Matt and Ben's fiercest competition might be none other than the Fab Five from BRAVO's "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy." Access Hollywood's Billy Bush spoke with Matt about going up against this fearsome fivesome.
"You're going head to head with the 'Queer Eye for the Straight Guy' dudes," Billy told Matt.
"I know. I met those guys. They're really nice, actually," Matt replied.
"Are you going to take them down? They're a force to be reckoned with," Bush added.
"There's more of them than there is us so I don't know," Damon joked.
Access' Tara Bernie mixed it up with the Fab Five as they celebrated their Emmy nod.
"You know what, the idea that we've been nominated for any kind of Emmy at all…we don't think of those guys as competition," "Queer Eye's" food and wine guru Ted Allen told Tara.
Meanwhile, fashion Fab Fiver Carson Kressley had a different take on the awards show. "It’s not an Emmy – it's a Femmy. We're up for three Femmys," he joked. "We're a shoe in!"
New York Post, 7/13/2004
Monday night's performance of "Rent" at the Nederlander Theatre was nearly delayed as security had to calm down a bevy of teenage girls and their mothers crawling over the orchestra seats to ogle "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" fashion guru Carson Kressley. Kressley was among friends: All four of Jai Rodriguez's "Queer Eye" castmates turned out to watch his reemergence on Broadway in the role of Angel (he had been in the show in 2002).
The Atlanta Journal and Constitution, 7/12/2004
Two guys from "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" came to Atlanta on Saturday, but instead of transforming a man, they mesmerizied an audience. Playing to a standing-room-only crowd at the International Gift and Home Furnishings Market at AmericasMart downtown, where they were invited as celebrity guests, design guru Thom Filicia and food expert Ted Allen shared some secrets about their hit TV show. Filicia, charged with the task of making a straight man's abode look like a castle instead of a pigpen, is careful never to overlook the kitchen. "I'll freshen up the kitchen so when Ted's in there cooking, it looks good," he said. So how long does it really take to turn an average guy into a cultured metrosexual with a stylish pad? Two and a half days. "We meet him on camera the same time you do," Filicia said. "They want to see our horror," Allen chimed in. When the cameras are rolling, it always appears as if the makeover subject fully buys into the concept. Not so, said Allen: One guy fought every suggestion the ''Queer Eye'' team offered. "He was just being a jerk. Suddenly, after two days, he thought we sincerely cared about him. I think his Prozac kicked in."

[Report from the 'Dangerous Liaisons' Benefit] Bravo’s Queer Eye for the Straight Guy’s Carson Kressley was immaculately turned out in Louis Vuitton with black velvet evening slippers. He was the very essence of class and good taste. His fellow cast member, Thom Filicia was a bit more casual in his no-tie, dining-on-the-beach attire, but it works for him, so no fashion violation tickets were issued to him.

Among those on the island [Nantucket] for last weekend's film festival were "Saturday Night Live" star and "Mean Girls" screenwriter Tina Fey, Dateline NBC's lantern-jawed Stone Phillips, former "Ed" star Tom Cavanagh, actor Bill Irwin, and Vanity Fair writer Maureen Orth, who debunks the celebrity culture in her new book, "The Importance of Being Famous," but had no trouble walking down the red carpet at the Kaufman tribute. Also, "Sex and the City" star Cynthia Nixon stayed at the Summer House in Sconset, while those "Queer Eye" fellas Carson Kressley, Kyan Douglas, and Thom Filicia poured drinks at the Pearl and dined at the Lobster Trap.

The memory of Estée Lauder was certainly present at New York's Waldorf-Astoria last month , as the company she founded dominated the ceremony at the Cosmetics Executive Women's annual beauty awards – taking home 11 Lalique statues out of the 23 contested product categories. After opening the afternoon with a tribute to the late cosmetics titan, the atmosphere turned jovial as Kyan Douglas of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy took the stage for hosting duties. The event was rife with laughter with the antics of Mr. Douglas and co-star Carson Kressley, who served as a presenter. Mr. Douglas put the ceremony on the light-hearted course from the beginning, when he swept over to plant a lip lock – à la Halle Berry and Adrien Brody – on Joan Lasker of ColorMetrics, who was presented the Enterprising Beauty Award. Later, Mr. Kressley expressed his fondness for Estée Lauder's Fabrice Weber – whom he called a hottie and warmly embraced when he approached the podium to claim an award for Aramis Life.

When it comes to the Academy Awards, they can never take away that nomination. The same can be said for the CEW (Cosmetic Executive Women) Best of Beauty Awards. Emceeing the awards were none other than Kyan Douglas and Carson Kressley from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. We got to meet them and even had my picture taken with them. Something for the DERMAdoctor scrap book! (By the way, they were really nice and Carson is hysterical).

When it comes to transforming straight men from drab to fab, the stars of the hit show "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" know where to shop. But the guys also know where to go for a stylish companion - the local animal shelter. "It's not a handbag, for God sakes ... who cares where it comes from?" said Carson Kressley, the show's fashion guru, who has three horses on his farm in his native Pennsylvania. "As long as you love it and it loves you, then that's all that matters," he said. Four of the "Fab 5" strutted down the runway alongside a brigade of shelter dogs in matching designer duds Monday at Animal Fair magazine's fashion show to celebrate the 100th anniversary of The Humane Society of New York. Thom Filicia, an interior designer and co-host of the benefit, said his rescued dog, Paco, sticks close to his heels. Jai Rodriguez, the "Queer Eye" culture guy, sleeps with his dogs, Nemo and Dory, whom he saved from a backyard breeder who thought the Yorkies were too big to sell. They share a Manhattan apartment with 13 mice, three parrots and various fish - which, Rodriguez noted, is not exactly a date magnet. Filicia says a shelter animal will always know you saved it. "It's a total unconditional love."

Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. Each show, the Fab 5 bound like superheroes from their black SUV to help a poor straight slob get his life, home and appearance in order. And all that renovating, restyling and tszujing is done in a single day - at least that's the conceit on the show. But as Jai Rodriguez, the quartet's culture expert, explains, "It's three days for us." Those whiplash shopping sprees? They're actually preceeded by hours of prep time. The one-day illusion "is not done to project these guys as magicians," says a Bravo spokesperson. "It's meant to keep the narritive going." And are the Fab 5 really as tight as they appear? "Yes," says design guru Thom Filicia. "We always say, if we didn't get along, there'd be an eyeball missing and you'd know it."

As the PR lore goes, [Ben] Jelen was "discovered" while hanging out with friends at a Jane's Addiction concert in New York and quickly got hooked up with legendary star-builder Guy Oseary. High-profile fans include labelmate Alannis Morisette (she told him "I've got your back") and Queer Eye guys Carson and Jai (they were won over by his reecent show at the Knitting Factory).

People asks: What do you think of 'The Passion of the Christ'?
Carson Kressley: If we can make it through Fear Factor, we can make it through this.
Jai Rodriguez: I'll see it when it comes out on video so I can pause it and be like, "Oh my God, too scary."

[Fall Fashion Week Report] Tag, you're it, Carson Kressley. "Uh-oh, I've been caught," Queer Eye's fashion guy said, as he fished a $485 price tag out of his (borrowed) Etro jacket. Not one to let a little fashion faux pas get in the way of fun, he said, "Badgley Mischka is the one show where you're guaranteed an extra-super dose of glamour. It's full-on, full-frontal fabulosity."
Jai Rodriguez: "My Yorkie Nemo's carrier is a little too gay for him--he just rolls his eyes when he's in it. I need to get him a Louis!"
Australian ABC News, 4/15/2004
[Report from the GLAAD Awards] Also on the red carpet was the fetching 'Queer Eye for the Straight Guy' ensemble. But they weren't here last year, and for a very good reason.
Carson Kressley: We were absolute nobodies just a year ago.
And the team doesn't flinch from pushing a radical agenda.
Carson Kressley: You could be a fashion stylist and be gay. Who knew?! Or a colourist.
Ted Allen: And we're all grateful for the people who sort of went before us - people like Ellen DeGeneres who did really courageous...
Carson Kressley: Paul Lynde.
Ted Allen: Paul Lynde.
Kyan Douglas: Bert and Ernie.
Thom Filicia: I'm opening the door for gays in the decorating field, so I feel really good about that.
Ted Allen: What's next? Gay caterers? I mean, my gosh! It's crazy.
Thom Filicia: Hairdressers.
Carson Kressley: We're smashing the pink ceiling, quite frankly.

Heidi Klum is following in fellow supermodel Tyra Banks' footsteps and producing a TV catwalk show. The pregnant German hottie was at Crobar the other night to debut her new Bravo show, 'Project Runway', a takeoff on Banks' 'America's Next Top Model'. The advertisers were apparently very excited to meet Klum, but not as excited as Klum was to meet 'Queer Eye for the Straight Guy' stars Carson Kressley and Jai Rodriguez.

Queer Eye for the Straight Guy interior designer Thom Filicia's new deal with Pier 1 is earning two thumbs up. But fellow "Queer Eyes" Kyan Douglas and Carson Kressley told us they disagree about how the houseware importer should dress their friend. Douglas suggests, "He can just wear Kirstie Alley's outfits." However, fashion fixture Kressley says, "I'm so glad they're not making him wear the same wardrobe as Kirstie. No blue ballgowns please."
Soap City, 3/10/2004
The cast of Bravo's Queer Eye for the Straight Guy -- AKA the Fab Five -- recently made the trek from the Big Apple to La-La Land to perform some west coast straight guy makeovers. Specifically, they spent time on the NBC lot in Burbank making over Jay Leno and The Tonight Show set. In between fitting Jay for a brand new belt buckle and replacing his desk and couch, stylist Carson Kressley and culture guru Jai Rodriguez stopped by Salem. Apparently, Jai is a Days fan from way back, with a particular fondness for Kristian Alfonso's character, Hope. He didn't get to meet his idol -- she wasn't working that day -- but he and Carson chatted with the rest of the cast, toured the set, and kept their style tips to a minimum. After all, the Days cast is pretty fashionable already.
BBC Radio 1, 3/2/2004
Kylie's been chatting to Radio 1 about her stint on 'Queer Eye For A Straight Guy'. The singer was a guest on Chris Moyles' breakfast show this morning (Tuesday) and we caught up with her about her appearance on the camp make-over show. We asked her if she managed to pass on some of her own fashion tips to the guys: "No, no no! You don't want to start me against five gay guys, know as the fab five! I think they know what they're doing. They're great guys. Carson is hysterical. He's not just funny on camera, he is just a delight - he comes into the room and you're cracking up laughing. I can't believe the success of that show, it really is a phenomenon, so it was fun to be involved in, and meet them and perform at their album launch. It was great!"

When Queer Eye for the Straight Guy's Carson Kressley and Jai Rodriguez went to the 2004 American International Toy Fair in New York recently to promote the word-building game "Take Four" by Learning Resources, they figured out that it could help with their show. "We're learning words like 'nest' and 'rat,' which comes in handy on Queer Eye," said Kressley, offering an example: "This is a real rat's nest you live in."
Publisher's Weekly, 2/23/2004
In the #7 spot on the hardcover nonfiction list is the official tie-in book to one of the most popular new TV series, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy: The Fab 5's Guide to Looking Better, Cooking Better, Dressing Better, and Living Better, by the Fab 5—Ted Allen, Kyan Douglas, Thom Filicia, Carson Kressley and Jai Rodriguez. Clarkson Potter's first printing is 350,000 copies and, given all the national publicity, selling that amount should be a cinch. Consider one day in the lives of the Fab 5: on February 17—the day the show's second season began—their media lineup included a live segment on the Today Show; taping of two segments for Live! Regis & Kelly; as well as Access Hollywood, Conan O'Brien and an evening book signing at the Chelsea Barnes & Noble in Manhattan.
Sydney Morning Herald, 2/23/2004
The latest urgent makeover job for the Fab Five presents the newly famous televisual style arbiters with an unexpected and rather intriguing challenge. Their first celebrity subject is certainly no slob, doesn't need any tips about how to dress, has no trouble attracting desirable mates and already lives in fashionable luxury. Kylie Minogue, though, desperately needs some Queer Eye. For the Struggling Girl, that is. Minogue's guest appearance tonight on the top-rating American makeover show Queer Eye For The Straight Guy comes as her much hyped "military-style assault" on the US pop music market starts to look a little light on ammunition.

[Dale Earnhardt, Jr. interview] [Dale] chatted with Regis and Kelly, where he met the cast of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. "They seemed pretty nice," Dale Earnhardt Jr. said. "One of them has a brother who races, and he was telling me that he'd been to like 10 Daytona 500s. They didn't give me any advice to try and hook me up with girls, which I could have used. I should have thought about that when we were there."
The (Australian) Sunday Telegraph, 2/15/2004
Hot on the heels of her recent Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording, Kylie Minogue has now received the nod from the Queer Eye For The Straight Guy team. "We love Kylie," Carson Kressley told The Sunday Telegraph at the launch for the team's CD soundtrack, What's That Sound? Kylie must have made quite an impact with the guys, as they added that they would like to come down to Australia ASAP. Kressley even went as far as to jokingly ask The Sunday Telegraph yesterday for "anything you can do - put in a good word with the Australian prime minister".
"We all want Australian boyfriends," added Jai Rodriguez.

The invite was for the release party for 'Music from Queer Eye For The Straight Guy' with special performances. A press release the day of the party announcing Kylie Minogue would make her United States performing debut at the party, left New Yorkers scrambling to find a way into Avalon (formerly The Limelight.) Celebrity guests spotted included Howard Stern, Jamie Gleischer of the MTV series 'Rich Girls,' actress Lindsay Lohan (Freaky Friday, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen) and tennis champion John McEnroe. The club's three levels were lined with fans eagerly anticipating the show. Ushering in Valentine's Day, vocalist Simone burst onto the stage dressed in all black with silver orbs at the cuffs. Singing to track, Simone's voice powerfully commanded to attention of revelers as she belted out the full length theme song to 'QE' from the soundtrack, 'All Things.' After Simone finished, the Fab Five - Kyan, Jai, Thom, Ted and Carson came out to welcome everyone. Gracious and funny, the ultimate party hosts made thanked the crowd and introduced Kylie Minogue who will appear on their show as their first celebrity guest.

[Grammy Report] Sting zipped through the crowd. When asked whether it was more important for him to win the Humanitarian Award or the regular Grammy, the rock legend, who was wearing a kilt, joked, "Winning the fashion award is the most important." His kilt won raves from the "Queer Eye" guys, except for the absent Ted Allen, who, according to co-star Carson Kressley, was off at a food show "making a bad pate." Kressley was wearing a metal studded, white leather jacket, he swore, and winked, "I embellished it all by myself."

Top 10 celebrity bachelors. What kind of guy makes our Top 10? For starters, he's got to be out--and good-looking. Being rich and famous doesn't hurt. He's got to be single, of course. But since gays can't yet legally wed in the United States, how is "single" defined? Two men under one roof (sharing one bed) are obviously off-limits. Ditto for a pair of guys going steady. But if they're casually dating (Robert Gant and Kyan Douglas rumors, anyone?), they're fair game. So here are our Top 10 Most Eligible Gay Bachelors-at least until Valentine's Day.
4. Kyan Douglas, Thom Filicia, Carson Kressley, Jai Rodriguez style gurus Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.
As a group, this quartet has the eligibility market cornered. But even singly, they're front-runners all. (It figures that the one who can cook--Ted Allen--is partnered.)
Downside: Can you ever measure up, or will you be destined for a life of domestic makeovers?

'Queer Eye for the Straight Guy: The Fab 5's Guide toLooking Better, Cooking Better, Dressing Better, Behaving Better, and Living Better" is selling better to the stores than publisher Clarkson Potter even dreamt. Us Weekly's first serial is out tomorrow. Me, I'm out today. Editor Chris Pavone put it together in six weeks. Crown Publishing Group exec Stu Applebaum says the five worked their tushes off. Vice president Tina Constable said they did the writing themselves. There will be two signings in
Manhattan. They do the "Today" show on Feb. 17, then "Late Night With Conan O'Brien," "Live With Regis and Kelly," followed by "Charlie Rose." Their production schedules had to be rejiggered between NBC, Bravo and the publisher to allow for the public appearances. And the thing's out next month.

With Queer Eye the breakout reality hit of the summer of 2003, just what are the queer boys planning for '04? On top of a whopping 42 new episodes and various collective efforts (the Queer Eye book due out in two weeks that netted the boys $1.25 million, the soundtrack, and wall calendar), here's what:
Dutton and Plume has purchased Carson Kressley's untitled full-color book on fashion which will be about "the simple sartorial staples of style from ascots to zippers, along with a dose of makeover magic for behavior and attitude." Kressley is is also starring in commercials for Marshall Fields.
Ted Allen has sold "COOK 1.0," which will include "100 recipes for novices (especially men), including the most fundamental dishes they should have in their repertoires," to Clarkson Potter, for publication in 2005. He's also made himself avaialbe for speaking engagements for "a minimum" of $25,000 a pop. (Ted will be the MC for the 2004 Pillsbury Bake-Off, for example.)
Jai Rodriguez, the 24-year-old self-proclaimed "culture expert," is now in the studio recording his debut album. The full-length release is expected to encompass dance, R&B, and pop. (Last year Rodriguez also released a dance track, "Love Is Good")
Design guru Thom Filicia is the new spokesperson for Pier 1 Imports and is also in talks about a deal that would give him his own branded line of Pier 1 products.
Kyan does not seem to have a book in the works. He has been traveling the country and charging $1000 to sit at a dinner table with him, but it's all been going to charity.
So what's in store for 2005? Expect a Kressley couture line, a chain of upscale Ted Allen restaurants, a line of Douglas hair care products, a sprawling Filicia boutique in Soho, and the founding of Rodriguez Records.
Minneapolis Star Tribune, 1/12/2004
After The Year of the Queer -- 2003, when metrosexuals and sitcoms and reality TV shows and Supreme Court rulings all helped polish gays' status to a high sheen -- it was no surprise that the HIV/AIDS-related charity Chicago House drew a record 500 people to its Saturday night gala at the House of Blues. But no one could have predicted how quickly the revelers would abandon all reserve when "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" stars Ted Allen and Kyan ("There's no excuse for nose hair") Douglas arrived. Digital-camera-toting partyers became a gaggle of predatory paparazzi ("Will you guys take a picture with me for my mom? She's a die-hard fan!"); a female impersonator named Scrumptious pressed her pink card into Allen's palm; and the whole passel pushed past a burly minder to get to Douglas, who wore an elegant, black-velvet Etro tuxedo jacket and jeans -- and nodded agreeably when a female fan chirped, "If you meet any straight guys, send them my way." Then a board member of the AIDS Foundation of Chicago wedged his way in, only to admit he hadn't seen a single episode of the hit series. "I'm not sure I can forgive that," quipped Allen -- which didn't prevent the man from asking for his help at the next AIDS Foundation to-do. "Sure," Allen replied good-naturedly, then shouted a faux-reprimand: "GET A TV!" What Allen sometimes calls "our little show" hardly needs another viewer. An average of two million people watched each episode last year; its white-hot popularity made the "Queer Eye" pair's presence a major coup for Chicago House, which has provided housing and support for those with HIV/AIDS since 1985.

Perhaps you've seen the Fab Five from NBC's Queer Eye for the Straight Guy in their TV ad for the NBA, one of the basketball league's "1,000 reasons why I love this game" spots. In the ad, style guru Carson Kressley says, "I love this game, even though we're the real Dream Team." And Kyan Douglas, the show's grooming god, says he loves it "because the tattoos really bring out the personality." But the ads were improvised, and PEOPLE.com has learned some of the Fab Five's more, well, sensitive comments, which won't be aired. The real reason Carson loves the game? "Because Charles Barkley is hot!" He also expressed affection for Dennis Rodman, and noted that, while watching basketball, "if you're lucky, you get to see a nipple every now and then." As for Kyan's true feelings: "I love this game because it has big balls!" |
