Kyan Douglas' entrance was met with the loudest applause and cheers during the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy in Manila Meet and Greet at the Glorietta Activity Center last 21 July 2006. Each of the Fab 5 had to be escorted by burly bodyguards as they walked to and from the venue. The quintet arrived just a few minutes before the scheduled program at 4pm. It was not exactly a secret arrival because they had to enter from a side door, which put them in direct view of the audience, who greeted them with waving and clapping. Jai Rodriguez took pics with his camera, and showed off the barong (local menswear) he was wearing. He also showed off the Tagalog phrases he had learned like, “Gutom na ako (I’m hungry),” “Salamat (Thank you),” and “Mabuhay.” Jai shared that he is coming out in the movie The Producers starring Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick and Uma Thurman. He invited everybody to visit his blog and listen to his music. When he was asked to sing, Jai Rodriguez sang a snippet of the Queer Eye theme. Thom Filicia volunteered to sing too but Ted Allen begged him not to, as in “seriously.” Thom acquiesced to Ted’s request. Thom Filicia and Kyan Douglas have an affinity for each other, not in a romantic way, but in a friendly way, like they would constantly whisper to each other their comments. Kyan Douglas acknowledged Thom Filicia’s contribution to the show as being the hardest as he constantly works “miracles,” and the rooms turn out to be “always amazing.” Thom admitted that it actually takes a couple of days to do the one day wonders that people see on the show. Thom Filicia proved to be the most eloquent of the group, usually the first on the uptake and answering almost every question. He made a comment that he thought that Nacho Libre was a very funny movie, but later revealed that he hasn’t seen it yet, which caused Ted Allen to rib him unmercifully. When the Fab 5 was asked whether they were really friends, Ted Allen cleverly remarked, “We’re trained Shakespearean actors and we’re working very hard right now.” When the question was raised of what the Fab 5 thought of Filipino men and women, Ted Allen immediately said, “Delicious.” The others joined in with descriptions of warm, stylish and gorgeous. Carson Kressley, who recently co-hosted the Ms. Universe Pageant, admitted that he would like to make over Vin Diesel so that he could just “see him with his shirt off.” At the request of an audience member whose daughter found it so funny, Carson tried to reprise his moment with a hotdog, which is constantly shown on the ETC channel. When Carson was asked regarding his opinion whether men with beer bellies should tuck in their shirt or not, Thom Filicia gamely showed off his own beer belly with a tucked in shirt. The Fab 5 have learned to listen to each other very well, and would rarely speak at the same time, a mean feat, to say the least, considering they’re five individuals. The Glorietta Activity Center was filled to the rafters. The show ended with the Book Signing, and their security teams shuffled off the Fab 5 by 5:25pm, five minutes earlier than scheduled. |
