Tszuj-It! -- A Fab Five Fansite

The Manila Bulletin, 7/23/2006

Queer Eye gurus lecture Filipino men

Five years of transforming regular guys into the kind that you would give more of than a second glance in the Emmy Award winning reality TV show titled "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," have also seen its five good looking hosts transform from just gurus into celebrities and fashion icons.

Wardrobe expert Carson Kresley, culture enhancer Jai Rodriguez, wine and food genius Ted Allen, skincare eye Kyan Douglas, and interior design guru Thom Filicia have all turned into stars as each is noticed now by the whole world for his individual skills and talents.

Proof of how big they have become since hosting "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" is their successful three day visit in Manila which was dubbed as "Ayala's Fab Malls Welcome the Fab 5!"

Upon their arrival in the country last Thursday, "Queer Eye's" Fab Five greeted the Filipino media at the Shangri La Makati and each shared the latest happenings in his life over a delicious lunch and lively conversation.

"I love Manila because it's a very cosmopolitan city," Thom enthused before the media at Shangri La's Rizal Ballroom. After his visit with Kyan in the country last year, requests from fans that they come back with Jai, Ted and Carson poured in.

That wish finally came true and their fans got more than the mere sight of the Fab Five.

Carson dished out tips on how Filipino men can look good and appealing in whatever occasion or place they find themselves in. "I don't like the word ˜fashion. You must only have the classics. Return to tailor classics. It's important that you have a classic shirt, always smell good and always have a nice watch," he said of men's supposed appearance.

Aside from overhauling a man with zero fashion sense in "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," Carson does cameo roles also in movies and in fact there's one in the offing which stars John Goodman. "I play an elf in that movie so I'm preparing myself for the red boots," he quipped.

Jai Rodriguez on the other hand will also appear soon in a movie and in Simon Cowel's new show on the Fox Channel. Aside from lecturing about the importance of having a culture in order to impress a girl, Jai simply believes that every guy should have a clean apartment to turn on his girlfriend.

As for Ted who just came out with a new cook book, food must be every guy's first consideration when planning on inviting his girlfriend over his place. "Always think of what she wants to eat," he emphasized.

Carson was quick to inject though that wearing something that you're comfortable in is the best start to a hot night with your girl. "Wearing something you feel comfortable in is sexy because confidence is sexiness."

As for Kyan who did guest appearances on TV's "Living with Fran" and constantly airs skincare advice online via www.loreal.com, the basics are still the best way to heat up the girl you desire. The simple act of shaving regularly would always put you on the safe ground, he believes.

As he continuously works on furniture collection, Thom, on his part, believes that you only have to keep your home real and unpretentious. "There is no particular formula to follow in order to have a beautiful home. Showing your way of life by creating an environment that suits you and tapping on objects that interest you is the only formula that you have to follow," Thom advised.

After sharing important guidelines that every Filipino men should live by in order to have a happy and livable life, The Fab Five turned to the women who had this question for them: "What can you tell women who fall in love with gays?"

Since they are self confessed gays, they simply quipped, "Have a credit card with a very high limit," and that put everyone in the room in stitches.
