As you know, Thom and Kyan were in Manila over the weekend, spreading smart and stylish ideas on grooming and interior design at the Alabang Town Center and Greenbelt 3 (in that order), and sprinkling large doses of laughter. ‘Hemlines and Punchlines’ caught up with the Design Doctor and the Grooming Guru at their lone press conference over lunch on Saturday, and yes, they were just as adorable and hilarious in real life as they are on the show. I wish you could’ve been there to watch them and hear them chatter gaily to the press. (I hadn’t laughed so hard since Sec. Ignacio Bunye retracted his statement on that wiretapped thingy, faster than he could say "GMA.") That hour with Thom and Kyan reinforced my firm belief that to be truly happy, a girl should always have lots of "pink" around her as I do. Guys like them—including my personal pink posse—know how to spell "fun" with the biggest capital "F" there could ever be, not to mention the word "friendship" too. (Aww . . .) Anyway, before my pink friends who are reading this start quivering at the lower lip, let me boost everyone’s egos just a tad today, and let you in on what the celebrity New Yorkers had to say about the Filipino lifestyle. Kyan: I’ve never been to a country where the entire population has such a tremendous sense of personal style—from the makeup to the clothes, and especially to the great jewelry! I just got gifted with a necklace today and I love it. It’s really, really impressive. Cool huh? That’s coming from no ordinary celebrity or grooming professional, by the way. That’s coming from one of People magazine’s "50 Most Beautiful People," Barbara Walter’s Presents’ "Top 10 Most Fascinating People," an Aveda Institute of New York certified cosmetologist, and the first-ever male spokesperson of the global beauty brand L’Oreal Paris, after the likes of Beyonce Knowles, Milla Jovovich, Natalia Vodianova, and Heather Locklear. You want more? Thom: You are all beautiful! I guess it’s the mix of different cultures—Spanish, Chinese, with Filipino. You’re all gorgeous! And you’ve got incredible lifestyle designs, from your homes to food and fashion. Manila’s a dynamic city. Now aren’t you blushing there! Thom, of course, meant every word he said, what with his superbly trained eye for beauty. Prior to his acclaim on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Thom garnered recognition as a major presence in the US design industry. He was named one the "Top 100 American Designers," as the genius behind the high-profile TFI Inc. (his initials), whose portfolio includes designing for New York’s Christie’s auction house, the US pavilion for the 2005 World’s Fair in Aichi, Japan, and (this one’s a cheap thrill), a renovation for one of Oprah’s viewers! Thom studied Interior Design at Syracuse University’s School of Art and Design, and (need we say) focused his creativity on high-end interiors. Best of all, he checked out the designs of the PSID (Philippine School of Interior Design) students at Home Zone, Alabang and was all praises for the sets! Now if I may sum up Kyan and Thom’s message for us beautiful Pinoys, it’s basically to keep on doing what we’re doing, style-wise. Dress the way we want to dress, live the way we want to live, because we won’t look good and feel good if we don’t express ourselves through our choice of lifestyle. It’s elementary dear Watson, but some of us often forget and get carried away with trends. And with that wise and wonderful reminder from the "Queer Eyes" let me end today’s column by giving you more delightful snippets from Kyan and Thom in Manila. I promise you, you’ll be tickled pink!
On doing a makeover on President Bush. On hair color for males way above the 20-year-old mark. On their favorite part of the male anatomy. On doing a makeover on PGMA. On what’s next for Carson Kressley, Ted Allen, Jai Rodriguez, Thom Filicia and Kyan Douglas. And finally (this one takes the cake), on lessons learned from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. So true, Kyan, so true. |
