iTunes, June 2005

The Fab Five's Celebrity Playlists for Apple iMusic.

Carson Kressley

Cher - Gypsies Tramps and Thieves. "I like the new Cher, the Classic Cher, and everything in between. This one tells a great story... just whose perfume was it? Ah, gentle listener, tune in and find out!"
k.d. lang - Summer Fling. "One phrase in this song sums it all up: Kennedy Flair. Makes me think of summer on the cape, madras and margaritas."
ABBA - Dancing Queen. "Dude, Sweden! This one always makes me feel good. Anytime anyplace. Guaranteed to make you sing along in your car like a major dork."
George Michael - Flawless (Go to the City). "Originally done by the Ones, Will give everyone the thrill of being chased by paparazzi. Good times. Good times."
Scissor Sisters - Filthy Gorgeous (Extended Original). "Who says filthy can't be gorgeous? It's dirty and clean all at the same time. Oh, the irony."
Kristin Chenoweth -Taylor the Latte Boy. "Who would have thought love would be so caffeinated?"
Gwen Stefani & Eve - Rich Girl. "Inspired by a showtune from Fiddler on the Roof. Sexy, updated and hot. Maybe they should do it for Fiddler on the Roofies."
Kristine W. - The Wonder of It All. "The gay anthem for summer '05. Ask for this one at your favorite tea dance. If you have to ask what a tea dance is, you probably won't like it."
Natasha Bedingfield - These Words. "More British dance flava. Groovy and not too hard. Just the way I like it. Except for the not too hard part."
Dido - Sand In My Shoes. "Makes me wanna hit the beach... or stay home and cry."
Vivian Green - Emotional Rollercoaster. "The name says it all."
Judy Collins - Send In the Clowns. "Okay, just seeing if you are paying attention. My bad."
Ciara featuring Petey Pablo - Goodies. "As the song says, 'If you're looking for my goodies / Keep on looking, cuz they stay in the jar.' Words to live by!"
Sheila E - The Glamorous Life (Club Edit). "Ghetto fab started here, people."

Kyan Douglas

R.E.M. - World Leader Pretend. "R.E.M. will always evoke a strong sense of nostalgia for me because of the significance of the time in my life I was first turned on to their music. I was leaving high school and all that that represents and coming into my own life for the first time. 'World Leader Pretend,' for me, is an anthem for self-discovery and autonomy."
Rufus Wainwright - Poses. "It is almost impossible for me to put into words why these songs, any song, move me and what they mean to me. It is especially hard to express why Rufus' work is so moving. His verses and music are hauntingly beautiful and truthful. Poses exposes our mixed up priorities."
Kate Bush - This Woman's Work. "Kate Bush's 'Sensual World' will also always evoke a sense of nostalgia for me. It reminds me of my friend Pam. 'This Woman's Work' is about, for me, the deep sorrow of our mistakes, and missed opportunities. It's a sad song."
Queen - Radio Ga Ga. "This is just one of those sings I will always love because it represents an era and has a distinct sound and feel. Freddie Mercury is missed..."
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart "How many nights did I spend on a dance floor with this song? When I was turned on to Joy Division, it was an epiphany. There was nothing like it on the radio where I grew up."
U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday. "A classic for my generation. I loved the drums. I loved the strength and passion of this song. Something I would come to love in many of U2's songs and later in Bono's humanitarian work."
Rufus Wainwright - Movies of Myself. "Rufus Wainwright's voice and lyrics are addictive. This is one of my favorite of his songs."
R.E.M. - You Are The Everything. "This song reminds me of road trips to Texas. I was in my early twenties when it came out. I remember long flat highways with green fields on either side and red sun sets."
Book of Love - I Touch Roses. "This song reminds me of being a senior in high school and dating a girl in college. She loved this song and I thought I was so cool for having a girlfriend in college. Oh well."
Jane's Addiction - Jane Says. "Another song of nostalgia. This one reminds me of Tallahassee, Fl."
A Flock of Seagulls - Space Age Love Song. "Wow, the eighties. Flock of Seagulls is the ultimate eighties band. This song reminds me of the dance floor at CPA on 'straight nights' in Tallahassee."
Aerosmith - Dream On. "Aerosmith is arguably the best American rock band ever. This song is a classic right up there with 'Hotel California' by the Eagles. It reminds me of my childhood and adolescence."
Spiritualized - Good Times. "This song is just good, psychedelic fun. Easy going and smooth. Not to be taken too seriously."
T. Rex - Planet Queen (LP version). "I loved T. Rex and this is one of my favorites."
Morrissey - Sing Your Life. "The Smiths and Morrissey represent an era for me, youth. I love the upbeat, airy feel of this song."
Fleetwood Mac - Rhiannon. "This is a classic. I love Stevie's voice and here it is at its best."

Thom Filicia

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here. "I swear I thought it was a cigarette."
Grateful Dead - Box of Rain. "My crunchy preppy years."
Jack Johnson - Gone "Driving to the lake."
The Killers - Somebody Told Me. "Someone left this in my car... and I love it!"
Eagles - Take It Easy. "Upstate New York."
U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday. "Summer camp with my girlfriend Muffy (true).
Air - Radio #1. "I feel like I'm floating."
Coldplay - Yellow. "One of my favorite bands AND one of my favorite colors."
Pixies - Alec Eiffe.l "I think the person that left the Killers album in my car also left the Pixies... thanks!"
Aretha Franklin - The House That Jack Built. "Summer of '92, Nantucket."
The Doors - Peace Frog. "My favorite band, named after an important element found in architecture.
The Sugarhill Gang - Rapper's Delight. "I'm not as old as Ted, but I am Old School."

Ted Allen

Doves - Words. "In no particular order. You gotta love anthemic Britpop."
Travis - Driftwood. "You gotta love really fey, anthemic Britpop."
Keane - Bend & Break. "You gotta love really, really fey, really, really anthemic Britpop. This whole album is so soaring and pretty."
The Dandy Warhols - We Used to Be Friends. "Picking one Dandys song is a tough call -I love everything they have ever done, in all their snarky, rockin', originality, grand scale, and decadent cooler-than-you-ness. I could pick 'Godless,' 'Plan A,' 'I Am a Scientist,' or 'I Am Over It' just as easily, but nothing seems to sum up the beautifully clever snottiness of this band as, 'A long time ago, we used to be friends. But I haven't thought of you lately at all.' On the other hand, this line from 'Solid' has always been a fave of mine, too: 'Yeah, l've got a beautiful new Asian girlfriend. She comes over and hangs around for days in my bed. I mean, you can't seriously believe I'm thinking about you, man.'"
Wilco - Handshake Drugs. "Best song on the new album. Except for 'Company in My Back.' Nobody writes smarter, sadder, better songs about people you love and also want to kill. I can't believe I lived in Chicago for 1 3 years and was too stupid to go see the band that would eventually become my favorite band."
Wilco - She's a Jar. "Best song they ever recorded, and that's saying a lot. The smartest, saddest, most interesting song Tweedy has written about people you love and also want to kill."
Belle & Sebastian - Step Into My Office Baby. "The jolliest song about sexual harassment that I can think of. Wry, witty, and - you're gonna sense a theme, here, soon - deliciously fey."
Kings of Convenience - Homesick. "Speaking of fey ... but God, it's beautiful. Nouveau Simon & Garfunkel acoustic folk, but Euro. Note: The photograph on the album cover shows the artists playing chess on the floor. I mean ... "
Tears for Fears - Call Me Mellow. "My favorite song from an amazing new album from a band that everybody should still be paying attention to. Purty, jangly, gorgeous harmonies. Sgt. Pepper-y in a really good way."
Ivy - Keep Moving. "Sleek and chic, like everything Ivy has recorded."
Joy Zipper - Alzheimers. "Why do I keep forgetting your name? Maybe I never liked you anyway.' Dark, dark fun."
Jesse Malin - Mona Lisa. "Smart, cool, real rock. Any band that plays with Jackson Browne at John Varvatos parties is cool by me."
Lambchop - Up with People. "Brilliant, subtle, weird and beautiful. Dark and joyful. (Thank God I'm not a rock critic - all these vague adjectives aren't very helpful, but I'm serious about them). I adore everything this band has ever recorded. They're from Nashville. I think there are about 75 of them."
The La's - There She Goes. "It is completely impossible to not be happy when you play this song. And none of the cover versions have ever come close to this one, the original. Which is to say that I really wish people would stop trying to cover it."
Phoenix - Run Run Run. "Cute, cool, young band from France; a great, fresh, laconic, sophisticated sound."
Badly Drawn Boy - The Shining. "The perfect opening suite to a rich, dense, fascinating album, front to back. Buy it."
Coldplay - Warning Sign. "Of course all of their songs are amazing. Somehow it seems as if this band will be around as long as U2, doesn't it?"
Talking Heads - Warning Sign. "Different song from the Coldplay bit above. From More Songs About Buildings and Food. Like a triptych with the two songs that come before it on the album."
New Order - Krafty. "Sweet, dopey lyrics that don't make any sense, that great, high-register stuff from Peter Hook's bass, pretty guitar chords. New classic New Order."

Jai Rodriguez

Jennifer Lopez - Get Right (Featuring Fabolous). "Okay, so my playlist is all pop and R&B. I know the other guys are more rock driven, so this list is a shout out to all my top 20 lovers. This track is on at least once a day, not just cause I Love J. Lo but the song makes me move. And the hip-hop mix is so HOT!"
Jennifer Lopez - Ryde or Die. "Love this song 'cause Jennifer really does some pretty runs and licks in this. It's sweet but the hook and melody in the chorus snag me."
Celia Cruz - Guantanamera (Live). "Get on your feet, Gloria Estefan - Sorry. My mom made me dance with her to this song often, growing up."
Martina McBride & Jim Brickman - Valentine. "What? This song breaks my heart. Love it! Love it!"
Destiny's Child - Lose My Breath. "These ladies are hot and super sweet. Their sound makes me wanna shake my body in a bootilicious way."
Usher - Caught Up. "I love him. Saw him at the Kentucky Derby and was too shy to say hello. The runs on the word 'so' slay me. His vocals make me wanna sing."
Donna Summer - This Time I Know It's for Real. "This is a song I remember hearing in my mom's car over and over on long trips. I love it."
Mary J. Blige - No More Drama. "I was going through a break up when this song came out. It will forever be my anthem."
Michael Jackson - P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing). "God I love him. He taught me how to sing."
Stevie Wonder - Signed Sealed Delivered I'm Yours. "What a voice on Stevie. Who wouldn't want someone to pledge this vow to them. It very romantic, yet upbeat."
Gwen Stefani - Hollaback Girl. "Sometimes I just wanna be Gwen Stefani. This song is the closest I am going to get to that, in my bathroom mirror with a hairbrush."
Queen Latifah - Baby, Get Lost. "I love Dana Owens' sound. It's real pure and not affected. It brings jazz to a new generation. I love it."
Jill Scott - He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat). "I did RENT with Jill Scott and she would play songs she was writing. I don't think any of us knew how famous she would become. I listen to these songs now and remember her playing songs on her guitar in that Vancouver hotel room."
Maxwell - Everwanting: To Want You to Want. "I love this whole album. But be warned, if this song is playing and you are lying in bed with your partner, you will end up pregnant."
